Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bryan Stephens, CEO of TalkForward, located in Marietta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have been practicing as an adult therapist for over 20 years, counseling adults on a wide array of issues common in today's world. I use a combination of cognitive restructuring and interpersonal psychology in my approach. Each of us faces challenges in our lives that we face with the tools we have. Together, we can work on new tools, understandings, and relationships with these challenges. It is through this process that we grow closer to our best selves.

I see each of us like a river. We see the rapids on the surface. We can deal with the rapids for symptom relief, so we can then explore the deeper parts of the river bed and the rocks that shape the river of our being.

I work with adult men and women of all ages as a psychotherapist. In the 21st century, many men find they are lost, without clear direction. Even materially successful men can find something that is missing from their sense of fulfillment. This is an area where I bring my own personal experience.

Tell us about yourself

I moved to private practice last year because I wanted to move from running organizations to direct care. I get great joy in seeing clients improve themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting to a full caseload in less than a year as a private practice therapist.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a small business owner means having to do everything yourself, from billing to taxes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find someone who has done it before, either a mentor or a coaching group.
  2. Talk to others in your field and take them out for coffee or lunch. Ask them about their successes. People love to share.
  3. Don't let getting discouraged stop you. This is a journey.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Working for myself as a private practice therapist is something I wish I had done sooner.
