What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach homeowners ages 45+ to design and decorate their own homes through my online courses and coaching programs.

Tell us about yourself

I was introduced to interior design as a teenager when my mother hired a designer to help her with our home. I was impressed by how she transformed each room so that it became a reflection of who we were as a family. I loved spending time in our home. My favorite part of the day is when I see my student's eyes light up because she now has the skills and understands the steps she needs to take in order to achieve her dream home.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having had a design firm and team of designers for the past 21 years has given me an understanding that building a system for executing our designs is just as important as the design aesthetic itself. I now teach homeowners to do this for themselves through a series of steps I developed and used in my firm. I find this really satisfying work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to wear many hats. When I had my firm, I didn't get to spend as much time actually "designing" as I would have liked.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Join a networking organization like ASID.
  2. ALWAYS keep the client your priority.
  3. You are nothing without your reputation.
