Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in human resources but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Garrick Throckmorton, Chief Product and Services Officer of TalentTelligent, located in Winston-Salem, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

TalentTelligent is a talent management publisher and consultancy. We partner primarily with for-profit, non-profit, and private sector organizations of all sizes that understand the value and importance of using talent tools based on decades of research. Inside these organizations, our primary customers are leaders in Human Resources.

Tell us about yourself

My career has been focused on playing talent management leadership roles across a variety of industries. That experience and exposure led me to join TalentTelligent and partner with industry thought leaders Robert Eichinger and Roger Pearman to provide education and talent tools to leaders that sit in the same seat that I held for 15 years. I believe that organizational success is dependent on ensuring that ALL team members can meet their individual potential. Knowing that my work allows this reality to come to life across the world is highly motivating!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are a fast-growing organization, and despite having launched in late 2019, we survived the shutdown of 2020 and have continued to build meaningful partnerships across a multitude of industries. This required an entrepreneurial spirit and a focus on resiliency that continues to fuel our accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a business is not for the faint of heart as you can experience euphoria and despair within one business day! This can be very challenging but also motivating as it drives an intense need to ensure that we are prioritizing the right type of actions and intent behind all of our strategies.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, adopt a beginner's mindset. It is easy to think that you have most things figured out and that you are an "expert" in your field. However, this can be a trap. Approach your work with an open mind to ensure your strategies and service model can flex with what you learn along the way.

Second, understand your customers deeply. What makes them tick? What feeling do you want them to have in association with your brand? Beginning with the end in mind, build a customer experience to drive your brand.

Third, surround yourself with the best team you can possibly find. Starting a business an easy. Running and growing a business is hard. However, with the right team in place, the journey is energizing and rewarding.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Building TalentTellligent is one of the greatest thrills of my professional life, and I am looking forward to sharing how our story continues to unfold for organizations across the world in the years to come. If you believe that people are central to your success, do yourself a favor and research a partnership with TalentTelligent.
