Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alixandra Laub, Founder of Tahoe Petrichor, located in Incline Village, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tahoe Petrichor is an herbal skincare company that sources its main ingredients from medicinal plants of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Tahoe Petrichor is a natural skincare company inspired by and made with plants of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These practical products were designed for active lifestyle; products like apres sun care, roll-on pain relief, rock climbing hand balm, and a yogi spray.

Petrichor /ˈpeˌtrīkôr/ is the official word for that lovely smell after the rain. That unforgettable scent is made possible due to the rain itself, plants releasing their aromatic compounds, and organic microorganisms. This synthesis of water, air, and earth is the most naturally occurring and literal form of aromatherapy. Since Tahoe Petrichor distills its own essential oils from local plants, we are able to capture those lovely local forest aromas. Every product highlights a different local medicinal plant, like incense cedar, juniper berry, and sagebrush.

Tell us about yourself

Every product is formulated and handcrafted by me, a local Herbalist with a Master's Degree in Herbal Medicine. Each product was created from published clinical science, sustainability, and bioavailable therapeutics. Beyond creating wildcrafted herbal remedies, I am on a mission to connect people to plant medicine. I think the earth and nature have given us the tools to heal and thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being nominated in 2021 for 6 of 6 awards through the local chamber of commerce - Entrepreneur, Business Stewardship, Creative, Innovation, Resilience, and Rising Star.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I try not to take on every project myself; I want to do everything from graphic design to product formulation and marketing. Learning that it is okay to ask for help has been a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Write a business plan! I was lucky enough to attend my Master's Degree while starting my business. I opted to write a business plan as my thesis; it was very useful for analyzing the project under all angles to see if it the ideas could actualize.
  2. Have a strong marketing plan. A massively successful idea is a good step, but not having a reasonable and diverse plan for spreading the word is crucial for growth.
  3. Have fun while learning critical lessons - both the easiest and the hardest part about having a business is overcoming the obstacles, and learning from mistakes with a positive attitude and kindness will help prevent them.
