Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Lettner, owner of Tagged It Paper Co., located in Essex, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tagged It Paper Co is a unique gift and stationery store in downtown Essex Ontario. Our gifts are rustic, old-fashioned, and eco-friendly.

Tell us about yourself

I have always kept busy with creating something from the time I was 10; creativity comes naturally to me. I was a vendor in many markets pre COVID, and when markets were canceled, it was time to refocus on how to continue to sell my products. A space in downtown became available, and the brick-and-mortar store allowed me to expand my handmade products to include products from North America that complement the handmade items in the store.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to see my creative vision become a reality with a brick-and-mortar storefront.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes along with being a business owner is the numerous hats you have to wear. You are the buyer, customer service manager, cashier, website designer, IT department, and accountant.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself and your business idea.
  2. Always be aware of what your competition is doing but focus and expend your energy on your business.
  3. Be clear on what you want to get from starting, running, and growing your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I believe that to succeed; you need to do what you love and love what you do. Success will follow!
