Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Crystal Hadnott, founder of Synergy Total Holistic Health & Wellness, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Synergy is an integrated nutrition counseling and functional wellness coaching private practice on a virtual platform.

Tell us about yourself

I became a student of nutrition after a medical crisis in my 20s and being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. After conducting many hours of research on the healing properties of food, I became passionate about studying nutrition, which led to me receiving several certifications and publishing numerous scholarly articles.

I have comprehensively studied over 100 dietary theories, the science behind food as well, as innovative methods in integrative wellness in developing my professional principles and private practice. I am a Certified Integrative Nutritionist, Functional Wellness Coach, Health Educator, speaker, and advocate for curating a holistic health revolution to help people operate at peak performance and reach optimal wellness.

My wellness philosophy is one that looks at the complete person and focuses on the full spectrum--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness of the individual. Since people are multi-dimensional, I believe that health has to be addressed with a multi-faceted approach. My approach is rooted in fully educating my clients to live a completely nourished life and arming them with the tools to take charge of their health.

As an authority in the wellness industry, I have written several e-books on various wellness topics. I also will be releasing my highly anticipated book, Living Nourished: Nurturing Principles Beyond the Plate. My work extends beyond spreading my knowledge and coaching on nutrition; I advocate for food justice. Through various nonprofit organizations, I am empowering communities in response to food insecurity and economic pressures that prevent access to healthy, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner happens each time I have a client decides to take charge of their health and reach their health and wellness goals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is not being able to provide help to everyone who needs my assistance. I am only one person at the end of the day--although the practice is expanding to include more nutritionists and student interns.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start: Your story can be your business.
  2. Run: Put yourself in your clients' position and think about what you would want as the customer.
  3. Grow: Form strategic partnerships--they are the secret sauce to marketing your message and expanding your customer base without dishing out too many dollars.
