Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyle Proctor, Founder and CEO of Synergy Strategy Consulting, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our customers have inspired entrepreneurs and future business owners looking for professional help in creating a comprehensive, action-oriented business plan. Our services also appeal to the current business owner looking for help with financing or funding or the owner looking for assistance with enhancing the business strategy to maximize cash, profit, and customer retention. Building detailed plans and helping owners accelerate performance is our core capability; our business plans begin with a financial feasibility study whereby our expert business plan writers conduct rigorous financial analysis. We construct the financial model first based on data-driven assumptions and then complete the remaining portion of the plan so that it becomes one integrated, cohesive document that drives action.

Tell us about yourself

I spent 12 years in consumer packaged goods, working for companies like Nestle and 3M. I attempted to start a full-service car wash six years ago, borrowed $100,000, and failed miserably. I didn't have the proper business plan or knowledge of the process at the time. This experience led me to find a way to help other entrepreneurs, which is how and why I started Synergy Strategy Consulting. We are a small team dedicated to maximizing the client experience and delivering exceptional quality, value, and results.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our team works very hard. Our efforts led to numerous referrals from other clients, and we recently reached our 100th client, which was a huge success for our team. Further, we have generated a large list of five-star reviews on Google, which has really helped our business. Our search engine optimization efforts have also helped us rank for specific keywords, and we're now ranking on the first page of google for our targeted keywords.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Reaching clients in a cost-effective manner has been a challenge. As a service business without a retail front, we're left to reach people via social media, word of mouth, or through paid advertising on Google. These efforts have been very hard and expensive, which is why we have committed much time and effort to execute a robust SEO strategy. Another aspect of our business is helping owners get featured in Google search results.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The most important thing any new business owner can do is invest in a professional business plan that provides an objective view of the market and business and lays out a clear strategy to win in the marketplace. The second tip I'd give to anyone is to cherish your customers and provide the absolute best possible experience. Customers are very influential, can refer you, can leave good/bad reviews, and can return for additional help. Deliver on expectations and always do what is best for the customer. The third major tip would be to build a clear customer acquisition strategy. There are many vehicles to reach your target base. However, most of these come with a price tag, so you'll have to write out a clear plan with the monthly budget so that your communication methods don't eat away your earnings. Attempt to keep customer acquisition costs to <10% of your gross sales.
