Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Granahan, Partner at SyncScript, located in Ambler, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SyncScript is a marketing research support services firm. We specialize in analysis support, qualitative recruitment, transcription, and translation. Our clients are research firms and suppliers, independent moderators, focus group facilities, and similar within the insights industry.

Tell us about yourself

My partner, Meghan Surdenas, and I knew there was a need for an agile support services partner in the industry, really listening and curating solutions for researchers. We set out to build a firm that met our clients' needs while also fostering a supportive, flexible environment for all our team members to strike a true life/work balance (not the other way around).

I am motivated by the camaraderie of our team, the hustle of new products, innovating, and building relationships with our clients, many of whom we also count as friends. Our business is relationship driven, both internally and externally, which, as an extrovert, is my sweet spot!

The startup of the business was such an exciting time for us, and as a small, agile firm, we get to continue that phase through new products. In the past few years, the way people research has changed, and we have had fun adapting to that through innovations and conversations with our clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing the vision we had really pan out! We just celebrated six years in business and had our highest H1 to date. We've created the culture we envisioned, and seeing our whole team collaborate and succeed together is very satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

A big challenge is trying to decide what to do next! We have so many ideas for growth that it can be hard to decide what the next best step is.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create a detailed business plan. Do your research on your industry and outline what, who, how, and why you're starting this business. You may not follow it exactly, but it gives you, and anyone else involved a roadmap and a vision.
  2. Don't feel like you have to reinvent the wheel. The thing that makes you stand out can be customer service, an innovative approach, faster turnaround, or other attributes.
  3. Be authentic in your conversations with potential clients and team members. Authenticity attracts people to you and your business and benefits you, as well!
