Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sydney Day, Owner and CEO of Sydney Day Fitness, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Online Personal Trainer and Coach. I help women prioritize their health, build a long-term lifestyle, gain strength and confidence, and do it without dieting or spending hours in the gym. I create custom workout programs tailored to your goals. I also create custom meal plans that won't give you chicken and rice every meal, work around any dietary needs, food dislikes and likes, and meal plans within your calorie range based on your goals.

Tell us about yourself

I originally went to school for Culinary Arts. I am classically trained in Cuisine. While in school, I was fascinated with what happens to food once it enters our bodies, so I enrolled in a nutrition program. While studying nutrition and what happens to food once it enters the body, I found myself in the gym and was amazed at my body transforming in front of my own eyes, so I enrolled in a 2-year personal training program, and here we are today. I am beyond blessed to get to use all 3 of my educational backgrounds in what I do today. I am motivated to make a difference in people's lives. I want to help heal individuals from a holistic perspective with movement, nutrition, and habit change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Changing people's lives. Leaving work every day knowing that I have left an impact on someone and made them feel more confident, teaching them something new. My job is never the same. I often say, "Everybody has a different body," so I am always approaching each client with a fresh set of eyes. I can't give "cookie-cutter" plans as each person is so different.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part is knowing where to start and trusting the process. Following your dreams and your vision and not allowing yourself to stray from the vision you have in your head.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in yourself. Hire a business coach. Trying to learn everything yourself is going to take you forever. Hiring out other individuals who can teach you the skills in 1/3 of the time will save you time and headaches!
  2. Find something you are passionate about and run with it. Chase your vision, think outside the box, and don't limit yourself. The world is at your fingertips.
  3. Remember growing a business doesn't happen overnight. A lot of businesses don't work out because people give up when it gets hard. It is going to get hard, but just remember why you started. And surround yourself with other business owners who think the same way you do. Networking is one of the greatest tools. Put yourself out there.
