Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Virginia Lynn Peterson, owner of Swoop, located in Chugiak, AK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small women-owned business in Chugiak, Alaska, that hand makes bras, underwear + loungewear for busy, active women. Our products are comfortable, fun + unique!

Tell us about yourself

The idea came from working as a nurse for 15+ years. I found it difficult to find a bra that I loved wearing for 12 hours straight. So, I designed one. I kept it simple. The rings and sliders are in the front, they are lined with modal, which makes them super soft against your skin, and our fun patterns make them fun to wear under any outfit!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Using real women as models. We get so much powerful feedback about using normal everyday women to model our products. We have created our own "girl gang" following that empowers + supports other women. It inspires me every day + really keeps me going!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time. You just never have enough of it. Learning to prioritize and being efficient with your time is crucial. And you HAVE to learn to make time for yourself + the things you enjoy...If you do not, YOU + your business will not be sustainable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Feel the fear and do it! Starting a business can be so scary, but if it is something you believe in, don't let fear be the reason to stop you.
  2. Think outside the box. Don't just get stuck or tied to one idea. Your products/ideas are constantly evolving, as are you....ride that wave.
  3. Stop beating yourself up. You will make mistakes. Learn from them, let it go, and keep moving forward.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Bras don't have to suck; you just need a better one.
