What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sweetpea and Co. create children's apparel and accessories that are as cute and unique as the children who wear and use them using the highest quality materials. We also believe that babies and children shouldn't be assigned gender stereotypes from birth that are reinforced by the clothing they wear. Parents love our designs because they are colorful, positive, and gender-neutral. And intended to be worn and used by all children.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Rachel, and in 2008 Sweetpea and Co. started with a couple of sewn baby dresses and a few embroidered baby bodysuits. Over time, the collection grew. In 2013 I became inspired by my first baby - a girl - and my newly obtained degree in graphic design. My first collection of screen-printed baby bodysuits debuted that winter. Since then, it has grown to include other clothing, accessories, toys, and artwork. I love what I do. Each day offers a different way to be creative and make something that I hope brings joy to people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Last year we exhibited for the first time at the Minnesota State Fair, which drew almost 2 million visitors. It was a great opportunity to interact with so many people, get feedback and learn what they are looking for in my brand.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a solo owner, I feel the enormous weight of the success or failure of the business on my shoulders. I'm protective of what I have built up, and especially with a rough few years, it can feel more precarious.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know, respect, and understand your customers. What do they need? How can you serve them? What can they teach you?
- Research. Research. Research. It's easy to get decision fatigue but do your homework. Are your prices where they should be to make a profit and be able to grow? Is it the right type of thing to make? How can I create this thing in a way that is cost-effective but mostly of high quality?
- Make friends with your fellow business owners, creatives, etc. Having a supportive network is so helpful. Make sure to give back as well. How can you support them?
