Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Hefford, Owner of Sweet Pea Yoga & Wellness, located in Denfield, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Sweet Pea Yoga & Wellness. My customers are everyone! What do I mean by that? Anyone that wants to learn yoga or even those who currently practice. I teach kids all the way up to seniors.

Tell us about yourself

I started my yoga journey right after having my daughter. My sister brought me to a local gym to try it. I fell in love with the journey! After years of practicing, I knew I wanted to teach it. Yoga has helped me through my anxiety disorder, postpartum after having my youngest child, and overall relaxed me. I wanted to bring this joy I feel with yoga into other people's lives.

In Aug 2020, I signed up to do my 200 RYT and completed it in October 2020. I then started Yoga with Kellz during the pandemic, and it was a huge success. I have now grown so much from going online to being back in person. I decided it was time to rebrand myself to Sweet Pea Yoga & Wellness.

Lastly, in June 2022, I became a Zumba Basic 1 instructor as dancing and exercise are great for wellness that aligns with my business!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having students come to me after class and tell me how much they enjoyed it. It means so much that I bring something to their day!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finances and marketing. For me, I have to book venues and ensure that I charge the correct amount to pay for the space while ensuring I am making a profit to grow. Marketing is tough because yoga is huge and growing more and more. Having to find why I am different is essential to my business!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't rush into anything! Take baby steps with everything.
  2. Sit down and think about how you will be different from other products/services. Show people how unique you are!
  3. Budget. Make sure you have the funds to be able to grow before jumping into the deep end of your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I have loved my business and always will. Have I learned a lot? Absolutely! That's the best part of business... you always learn and grow!
