Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janaya Martin, Owner of Sweet November Bakery, located in Historic New Castle, DE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a Home Based bakery serving New Castle and Kent Counties in Delaware.

Tell us about yourself

I have been baking since I was 7. Sweet November Bakery started out as a hobby. As time progressed, I realized that baking has become much more than that. Seeing the pure joy on people's faces as they enjoy something you created is just an amazing feeling. I want to be able to give that feeling to everyone. I am a new mom. I have a beautiful seven-month-old daughter. She is definitely my motivation these days.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was just honestly the way I was able to push myself to start my business and keep it going without any knowledge of how anything worked.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I would have to say is trying to build the traffic to keep the business going. It is especially challenging for me because I have no marketing experience and am not social media savvy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Push yourself.
  2. Don't give up. Even when you feel it's not working out.
  3. Don't compare yourself to others. That will be your biggest downfall.
