Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beth Telford, Co-Owner of Sweet Almande, LLC., located in Parker, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We produce, manufacture, and sell cinnamon crunch almonds, pecans, and cashews in approximately 32 flavors. Our customers are the general public, corporations, real estate brokers, etc. Typically anyone who likes nuts.

Tell us about yourself

My husband, Bruce, and I started this business as a matter of necessity, and we turned our affinity for cooking and creativity into something special. What motivates me to continue daily doing what we do is the look on our customer's faces when they try our product for the first, second or twelfth time - it is one of yummy astonishment that a simple almond could taste like watermelon candy or a chocolate orange, or a maple spice pecan can turn simple pancakes or waffles into something magical.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not being afraid to change things up, i.e., rebranding, updated packaging, and trying new recipes with our finished products.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Lack of time for personal pursuits and the financial hardships. When you own your own business, it becomes a 24/7 venture. Because of the nature of our business, we have very little time to enjoy the holidays with friends and family because we are always working. During our slow times of the year, we worry about whether we will make ends meet on a monthly basis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you love to do, and you'll never "work" another day.
  2. Give it everything you've got, and be passionate about your product or service.
  3. Make sure your customers or clients are completely satisfied, even if it seems unfair. They are your best referral and partners in marketing.
