Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Arturo Sutter, Founder and CEO of Suttertek, LLC., located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Suttertek has three very defined lines of business within information technology:

• IT Compliance (IT audits, gap-analysis, security awareness, IT due diligence, and all legal regulations and standards, related to information technology).
Most customers are companies going IPO, recently became public, or public companies that request some help with IT SOX compliance.
• Software Development (webpages and mobile apps).
Typical customers are small companies, starting companies, and individuals that need personal and or professional web pages.
• IT Outsourcing (provides IT Project Managers, Developers, Auditors, and all IT personnel based on customers' demand).

The customers of this division are local (US-based) companies that need temporary help in IT development, project management, IT audit, or other specific IT disciplines for a certain period of time. There are also companies from abroad that want to do business in the United States and need local knowledge, mostly in marketing and sales.

Tell us about yourself

Suttertek was officially founded in Miami, Florida, the USA, in 2018; however, the company has existed as a singular person doing business as (d.b.a.) since 2002 with the name of "Suttertech." I initially created the company to do side jobs to fulfill the demand for my business and technology expertise from neighbors and small companies, but rapidly word-of-mouth increased the demand for medium size and well-known corporations.

At that time, I still preferred the comfort of the corporate job environment that I entered at 19 years of age as a computer programmer. I climbed the corporate ladder in different Fortune 500 corporations, always in Information Technology. After traveling all over the world for a significant deal of time and having been there doing that in the corporate world in 2017, it was about time to dedicate myself to the creation and focus on the business that I love and the profession I excel in.

Suttertek LLC started providing IT Compliance advice for companies that go public, IPO (Initial Public Offering), or need to keep up with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) requirements or other regulated data laws and/or data standards. At the same time, excellent professionals joined the business success and became the best value an organization can have, their individuals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just to establish a business that is still running and has prevailed in the recent pandemic situation is already an accomplishment. Precisely, I think that my biggest accomplishment was finding Suttertek without any models in my family. My grandparents, parents, my brother, and I have all been employees. I am the first entrepreneur in the family, and I am proud of that.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a previous corporate employee for many years, the lack of benefits and periodic payments was the thing that made me anxious, especially in the beginning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First is just to start, especially if you have a current source of income like a job, full or part-time. In that way, you'll feel less anxious until the first client or the business itself starts to produce some earnings. Second, give it a try and do not back down at the first hiccup or problem. And third, be prepared to adapt, which is key to growing the business. Focus on things you can really add value and do not worry that much about things you have no control over.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think it is important to project with your acts and behavior the type and form of business you want to have. The rest will follow.
