Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Calen McNeil, Founder of Big Wheel Burger, located in BC, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

Our business is a fast-casual burger chain. We are Canada's first carbon-neutral restaurant. We have a foundation that donates money back to the communities we are in.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

Community work motivates me the most. I enjoy providing good-paying jobs in a sector that is usually low-paying.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing annual sales at 15% while creating a triple bottom line business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

Trying to maintain your quality and brand image as you grow to multiple locations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure you have a strong business plan with detailed financial forecasts. Plan for the worst-case scenario and make sure you have enough capital if it is a slower launch. Try and find a higher purpose in your business to give people a more significant reason to support you. Set yourself apart from your competition, so you don't have to compete on price or quality.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Build a plan that involves supporting staff, the community, and your business.
