Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susie Beghin, Founder and Owner of Alpha’s Discovery Kids Preschool and Daycare, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Alpha’s Discovery Kids daycare and preschool is dedicated to providing children with an exceptional educational program to develop the whole child through an emergent, inquiry-based curriculum to achieve academic success.

We provide warm, consistent care to teach and nurture children in a loving, respectful manner. Our goal is to give each child the best start in life by providing quality education and a positive learning environment to spark children’s natural curiosity, exploration, and inquiry.

Our planned activities and stimulating interactions with peers and teachers promote raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted children. We have developed a unique curriculum called The Four Pillars of Learning which includes Language/Literacy, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), physical activity/nutrition, and mindful awareness.

We offer toddler, preschool, kindergarten, and before/after school programs for children starting at 12 months up to 12 years old.

Tell us about yourself

I'm the proud owner of Alpha’s Discovery Kids Preschool and Daycare, a division of Alpha’s Discovery Club Inc., and a mom of two children. I'm family oriented and love children. I opened my own business so that I could have the flexibility to spend more time with my family while pursuing my passion to work with children.

I opened Alpha’s Discovery Club in 2004 as a children’s entertainment company which evolved into a high-quality preschool and daycare for children with locations in Mississauga and Oakville.

By becoming an Early Childhood Educator (ECE), I was fulfilling my dream of owning my own education-focused daycare. I was committed to learning as much as I could about child development so I could help children reach their full potential. My mission is to give children the best start in life by providing nurturing care and education!

I'm very driven and want to spread my education-focused Four Pillars of Learning curriculum to more children by expanding to new locations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the impact that my program has on families and children each day. I love to support families with quality care and an educational program for their most precious resource- their children.

I enjoy seeing the smile on children’s faces when they get dropped off. I enjoy watching children learn and seeing their progress as they gain new skills. I'm happy to help form and inspire the next generation of leaders.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult aspects of entrepreneurship is time. Sometimes, it feels like you don’t have enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do. As an entrepreneur, it’s difficult to stop thinking about your business when you are at home. It takes effort to refocus your thoughts and learn to be present with your own family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with your passion. Work comes easy when you are passionate about what you do. When you enjoy what you do, it is easier to deal with all the difficulties that come with entrepreneurship.
  2. Learn to delegate and outsource. Only do those tasks that you are good at and delegate the rest. This will free up your time to do your best work. This also leads to your ability to scale up and expand your business and income.
  3. Hire a good business coach. This is essential to growing your business. A good coach will expand your mind and help you to see things differently. They will challenge you to do those things you don’t think you can do.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being an entrepreneur can be both difficult and rewarding! I am so happy I get to do what I love every day. When you do what you love, you feel like you don’t work a day in your life!
