Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Ting, Owner of Susan Ting Physical Therapist Health Profession Corp., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a physiotherapist trained at Sydney University, Australia. My clients are people who suffer from chronic musculoskeletal conditions due to physical injury or past surgical procedures, autoimmune inflammatory arthritis, or folks who have had joint replacement surgeries, especially hips, and knees.

Tell us about yourself

I was first introduced to the world of physiotherapy rehabilitation using the Pilates approach through Rochenda Howard and Julia Ellis when I took their course in HK in 1998. All the light bulbs turned on in my head as I began to see the full body postural movement connections and control - or lack thereof, in myself and my patients. As a result, I changed my professional training subspecialty, apprenticed and trained with Rochenda in her BET system of rehabilitation, and set up a practice offering the same service in Vancouver whilst she provides her service out of Toronto. I also work in public healthcare, where I integrate this system into rheumatology physiotherapy, the care of patients with arthritis, and other autoimmune inflammatory forms of arthritis. The potential for integration into a much wider spectrum of clinical practice settings, patient conditions and level of functional recovery for much more debilitating and chronic diseases, the quality of life and freedom my patients get to experience continues to blow my mind. It is creative; it is fun and gratifying to be able to give someone back their measure of physical independence and daily function, moving better and freer, opening up greater possibilities of social life for people who have suffered chronic pain due to physical limitations. It gives me joy and a meaningful purpose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing the physiotherapy community that adopts the BET physiopilates system in their practice in British Columbia, both in the public and private sector. I share this unique and sustainable long-term change approach by training other physiotherapists in the field, disseminating it by organizing BET courses, and co-instructing with Rochenda in Vancouver. It fills an important physiotherapy practice gap in its service to people with chronic physical conditions.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Needing to cover all the aspects of running a healthcare business with an education arm and being a practitioner/clinician at the same time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your product well. If it involves a skill set, don't stop learning or growing yourself. Keep getting better at it.
  2. Be willing and ready to work hard.
  3. Practice integrity and care for people.
