Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts and crafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Purney Mark, Textile Artist, Author, and Instructor, located in Pender Island, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am passionate about fabric, threads, paints, and dyes, and I spend my time creating contemporary art quilts with all of those things and much more! The most exciting part is sharing what I love with others and spending time in conversations about my inspirations and processes. While I work large scale in my wall art, I also create smaller, functional items for home decor as well as collages, both paper and fabric. Some of my focus is on text and narrative, the underlying meanings behind what might inspire me as an artist.

Tell us about yourself

I come from generations of talented women who created something out of nothing, with elegant needlework, fine clothing, and more. I have designed a line of quilting patterns and have written six books as well as several DVD's and magazine articles. I love to get up each morning with a questioning idea that will lead me forward to discover what might come next. My favourite quote comes from Ann Hamilton, an artist and writer: In every work of art, something appears that does not previously exist, and so, by default, you work from what you know to what you don't know.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That's a tough one! Sometimes it's being recognized by my peers, sometimes it's selling a big piece of art - but it probably is knowing that I am doing what I was born to do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping on top of the paperwork and office stuff when all I want to do is create art!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a passion and pursue it!
  2. Make a plan and work it!
  3. Be willing to pivot in another direction!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Over my art career, I have had many roles, teacher, author, designer, and more. Being an artist isn't just about making the art, but it's at the core of all I am and all I want to be.
