Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Meier, Founder of Susan Meier Studio, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an independent brand consultancy. I do large-scale projects with corporate clients in the healthcare space, and I also work one-on-one with small business owners. I specialize in brand positioning and messaging.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business 12 years ago after starting my career at the Boston Consulting Group and then working for a few boutique branding agencies. At that time, I was seeking more flexibility and control over my schedule so that I could make time for parenting and art-making. Happily, it turns out I love being an entrepreneur, and the added benefit of being able to mindfully select the work I do - which clients, which industries, which challenges - has made my work so much more meaningful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching, maintaining, and steadily growing business for 12 years feels like a big accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Because my priority was flexibility, I wanted to be a solo practitioner. The hardest thing about that is that it can be a little lonely. Over the years, I've gravitated toward a few different groups of like-minded entrepreneurs, which have been a great source of support.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know yourself. Be really honest with yourself about what you want, what you're good at, and how you're different from the other people who do what you do.
  2. Know your audience. Thinking about who your client is and what they care about will help you connect with them.
  3. Be patient. It can take a lot of runways to get even the best idea off the ground. Make sure you've got the practical and emotional resources to stick out the early days as well as the inevitable ups and downs. And trust that you WILL succeed if you keep at it.
