Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Morgenthau, Founder of Supreme LSAT, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Supreme LSAT, we mentor future lawyers. We work with students across North America through a suite of online tools. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, including mature students, students with learning disabilities, and working professionals.

Tell us about yourself

I started my own business because I wanted the freedom to teach according to my own curriculum. I began tutoring the LSAT after leaving a private law firm. Working for other companies, there were a lot of things that I saw could be done differently. In founding Supreme LSAT, I aspire to build a nurturing community for our students and for the tutors that I have hired.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, the biggest accomplishment has been establishing a pro-bono tutoring program for prospective Indigenous law students. Under-representation of Indigenous peoples in the legal profession is a serious problem. Working one-on-one with some fantastic Indigenous students has been really rewarding, and I very much look forward to watching them grow in their legal careers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of owning a business for me has been setting our prices. I want our service to be as accessible as possible. That is why I have set my prices very competitively. At the same time, I want to pay the other tutors that work with me as much as possible. Managing to do both whilst covering my over-heard is quite the challenge. Overall, I know that my tutors are really happy working with me, and students are really grateful for our prices. So, for now, the balance seems to work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire help - you can't do it all yourself.
  2. Keep on top of the numbers. Data is your friend.
  3. Just get started!
