What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder of a healthy fruit snack brand, Super Boom Foods. Although my target customer is adults, my customers range in age from 2 years - 60+ years—many who are health conscious and educated in the nutritional world.
Tell us about yourself
Super Boom Foods was created after I lost two beloved family members from cancer (one at the age of 66 and the other at 33). Because of my losses, I knew I needed to find a way to help and educate consumers on what they can do to combat cancer by ingesting antioxidant-rich foods. Although diet is not the only factor causing cancer, it can certainly help in assisting the body in fighting free radicals that may lead to cancer.
Antioxidants and antioxidant-rich foods are not new to the market, but the difference between Super Boom Foods and other products out there is our taste, shelf-life, and convenience in getting your daily dose of these much-needed nutrients.
We make all our products with ONLY organic antioxidant-rich fruit and veggies that are bite-sized and convenient to eat! There is no need to mix water (unless you want to) or pop any bitter pills into your mouth. Our products taste like candy and melt in your mouth like cotton candy, but they are made of only freeze-dried fruit and veggies.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is to educate the effects of antioxidants and why we need to understand them to help give our body what it needs to fight free radicals.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is making them. Did you know it takes 5+ days to make a single batch of freeze-dried Super Boom Foods. 2 days to blend the organic materials, and then freeze. Then an additional 3+ days just to freeze dry in the machine and then package. And we're a small business, meaning it's just me and, occasionally, my husband to help. We are currently in the process of finding a manufacturer to help make our products, but since freeze-drying is still relatively new, there have been many roadblocks along the way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Launch early, and learn along the way. I was in the farmers market as soon as I had my first two flavors, then I slowly added new flavors and learned what my customers really liked and wanted.
- It's ok to fail, just get back up and try again. I've had many challenges with my machines breaking down, but I just fix it and move on and continue.
- Packaging is essential, but not when starting. Looks are important, but it's ok to grow your packaging as your brand grows.
