Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Doherty, Owner of Sundance Massage & Wellness, located in East Greenwich, RI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sundance Massage & Wellness is a self-care sanctuary that caters to every BODY and everybody! If you choose to make yourself a priority, we've got a multitude of wellness offerings, including therapeutic massage, infrared saunas, classes, workshops, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I am a licensed massage therapist, energy worker, certified yoga instructor, and meditation and breathwork facilitator. As a free-spirited manifestor, creating my own business was the perfect path for me. I began on a small scale, offering solely massage therapy, and allowed it to evolve into a larger wellness center. I feel that it's so important to hold space for people to care for themselves since most are overwhelmed and under indulged. When I witness the transformation of each client and student after a session or class, it lights me up! I also love providing a positive and supportive environment for other practitioners and instructors to share their gifts and feel empowered.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After 20 years in business, it's been enormously rewarding to know how much of a positive impact we've had in our community. Being able to support and inspire our clients and students has been so fulfilling.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The unpredictable external variables that are out of your control have the potential to be extremely challenging to navigate. It's been helpful for me to maintain resiliency and ride it out to the best of my ability. I've found that what appears to initially be a negative has ultimately turned out to push me toward something better. For example, when my rent increased without notice, I explored other options and eventually bought a commercial space that is financially more advantageous and a valuable investment. So-called challenges can end up being blessings!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For anyone interested in owning their own business, I say, 'go for it!' You'll never know if you don't try. Find your purpose, fuel it with your passion, and embrace a whole lot of patience.
