What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have this amazing camp called SummerTech that serves young tech-minded children between 4th and 12th grade. We provide a warm and inviting geek culture experience that promotes self-expression while offering an accelerated computer science education that is personal and individualized in low 2:1 camper-to-teacher ratios.

Tell us about yourself

In the 90s, I became part of a small team that built a large nationwide summer technology program. I grew up spending my summers at a traditional sleep-away camp. I saw the opportunity to bring that culture into my own technology camp, and SummerTech was born. I'm motivated by the difference my program makes in the lives of my campers and their parents.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is longevity. We have been through recessions and pandemics and are still standing strong since 2002.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

SummerTech has taken on a model that requires a large staff and many moving parts. Every year is a re-organization of roles and responsibilities as my summer staff is constantly changing as my teachers begin their own careers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be your word and do what you say you will do.
  2. Trust your ideas and see them through. Put them into motion. Failure has upsides.
  3. Underpromise and over-deliver.
