Tell us about yourself

Styled by Natasha Marie is operated and owned solely by me, Natasha Mills. I am a graduate of three of Canada's leading universities. My educational background has positioned me well as an advisor in my field with the ability to consult with clients in a professional and thoughtful manner. I have worked in the corporate field, which has furthered my experience in working with diverse groups of people and high-level organizations and my ability to collaborate with various sectors and stakeholders.

My passion for decor permeates every aspect of my life and is reflected in my creative processes and design outcomes. My work embodies the core vision of our clients with whom we collaborate.

One of Styled by Natasha Marie’s guiding principles is the active and intentional support of local community ventures and partnering with small black business owners to work together in the fight against social injustice and mental health stigmas. Our mandate includes building community partners with organizations that reflect equity, unity, and health values. With this principle in mind, we have collaborated with partners to provide workshops for mental health and healing through plants, sourcing donations for children in inner-city communities and abroad, operating an after-school program for inner-city youth, offering complimentary services for new businesses, and donating to various charitable organizations focused on creating safe spaces for youth.

Though small, we use our resources to make positive contributions to other small businesses and the communities in which we live. We believe in doing so, we are working to create a better future for young Canadians that aspire to become entrepreneurs through opportunities, representation, and access.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment to date is having my work featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair, both in print and online platforms. Collaborating with clients and industry partners to bring their vision to fruition is one of the highlights of my business. Flipping through the pages of my favourite magazines and seeing a photo I styled is truly a dream come true.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest aspects of being a business owner is finding balance. With so many demands from family, relationships, and a career, it is hard at times to balance it all while aiming to be successful in all areas. I have found that setting aside some time for yourself really goes a long way. The ability to step away, decompress and return with a renewed point of view has helped me remain creative and develop innovative styling strategies for upcoming projects.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be consistent.
  2. Invest in self-care to avoid/ combat burnout.
  3. Surround yourself with like-minded people that will inspire, push and motivate you to do more.
