Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steven Weisman, a high-performance coach based in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a Coaching Service Boutique offering a variety of coaching frameworks to methodically support the unique skills, qualities, and strengths my clients want to embody inside and out. Curiously, my customers range from newly self-proclaimed entrepreneurs and coaches who want to make a successful transition from the corporate arena to young adults wanting to build confidence by choosing a purpose-driven career path early in their lives. Not a jack of all trades, but usually, if what you want is 'more of something' in your life and you're willing to work for it, I'll work with you!

Tell us about yourself

I am a Certified Life, High-Performance, and Mind Mechanics, coach. I decided to start my business when I kindly retired from the corporate broadcasting industry. My main motivation for this was to live, love, and make my livelihood with purpose and soul. I'd been working on this plan to transition into a coaching/consulting service for many years. I feel inspired and find it deeply fulfilling to shorten the period of time a person thinks they need to effect desired transformations in their lives, relationships, business, and spirit. I wake up every day to live my dream of thinking of new ways and methods to improve the manner in which we relate and communicate with ourselves and others. This, I find, is usually a great starting point and catalyst for anyone looking to effect personal change in their lives at so many levels. One of my goals in life is to make the coaching process more effective and transformative.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner was to successfully transition from a corporate framework mindset into an entrepreneurial mindset. I tell you, it sounds easy but when you've been part of any given habitual system of thought with particular expectations for a long time as I was, moving into a new space proved to be my biggest professional challenge to date. I found that when I first transitioned into the online space, my habitual mental and emotional responses were incongruent with the challenges I was facing. Because of this, and as a large percentage of new entrepreneurs are quickly finding out when they also jump into the online marketplace, is that we can lose our confidence and even our drive to pursue our business dreams if we don't learn and adapt quickly. Realizing, striving, and overcoming this internal tendency was the biggest game-changer for me!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I find that the hardest thing that comes from being a business owner is developing the mental & emotional skills to properly balance and understand the challenges of entering a new business space. Without this in place, the romance and glitter of becoming an entrepreneur can quickly fade. We all like to believe that we can launch a business successfully without the support of other accomplished peers or coaches. Once a business owner recognizes the true value of a mentor/coach partnership, it's truly amazing how we can learn to navigate challenges more confidently and in a timely and cost-effective manner as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Great question. When we first think of starting a business, we first must plan, then plan some more, and dare to think outside the box. Second, you must know your product, services, and the ideal customers (inside and out) that will keep your business growing. And third, you must quickly learn to adapt to changing conditions to stay profitable. All this is a fraction of what you'll need to know about your business plan. However, I find that the most important factors for any business to succeed lie not within a business plan but rather in the mental, emotional, and spiritual dynamics of its owner(s) and that my friends are learned behaviors we can all effectively develop.
