Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Disselhorst, Founder of Steve Disselhorst Leadership Coaching, located in San Bruno, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Steve Disselhorst. I am the founder and principal of a Bay Area coaching and consulting firm that focuses on leadership development and executive coaching. Mid-managers, executives, professionals, and business owners from underrepresented communities (LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and women) in the biotech/pharma, healthcare, and tech industries and leaders from the dominant culture who are working to become inclusive leaders.

Tell us about yourself

In 2019, I left the stability and predictability of a 25-year career in corporate America to pursue my desire to become an entrepreneur. I founded my coaching and consulting practice to create greater meaning for individuals and teams and, ultimately, a more significant impact on the world.

I am motivated each day to help clients change by becoming aware of behaviors that hold them back from achieving their full potential, helping them be authentic in finding their unique purpose, and taking action to move them forward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I helped many people make meaningful changes in their personal and professional lives. I now have clients referring businesses to me based on their positive experiences.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a sole practitioner at this time, I never realized how hard it would be to actualize my business without thought of partnerships and mentors. Initially, I tried to figure everything out independently, but it didn't work. Now, I reach out to a bunch of people that can help me think through my strategies and product offerings.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient - building a business takes a long time.
  2. Believe in yourself and your product, and keep putting yourself out there.
  3. While your business is your #1 priority, it's not always that way for your customer. Clients will come when they are ready to engage you.
