Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health supplements but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephen Zieminski, founder of Naked Nutrition, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Naked Nutrition is a premium supplement brand that focuses on only the highest quality ingredients, so you know exactly what you're putting in your body. Our customers tend to be working professionals who want to stay in shape and perform well at the gym or in their sport of choice.

Tell us about yourself

Years ago, when I was working at a bank in New York and trying to stay in shape while working long hours, I realized that many of the supplements I was using were packed with useless ingredients and unpronounceable chemical compounds that provided very little nutritional value. I saw a gap in the market, and so in 2014, I launched Naked Nutrition with five products, including the now best-selling Naked Whey from grass-fed California cows and Naked Pea from raw yellow peas grown in the USA and Canada. I stay motivated to keep building Naked Nutrition because of the positive responses we get from our customers, and the growth that we've seen inspires me to keep creating new and innovative wellness products.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing the business and team in a sustainable manner. It's very easy to get caught up in top-line numbers, but I try and approach business from a disciplined perspective where profit isn't sacrificed for the sake of growth alone.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying focused on what I can do to have the biggest positive impact on the business. There are so many issues & opportunities vying for my attention at this stage that it can be easy to get distracted if you don't have good short and long-term planning and goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a winning product. It doesn't matter how good you are at sales, marketing, or social media if you don't have a product that your customers can get excited about.
  2. Learn to hire & delegate. When you first start a business there's so much that you need to do yourself and it can be tempting to stay in that mindset but if you want to get to the next level you need to focus on the big picture of the business and build a team to handle the rest.
  3. Never stop learning. This is true of life in general, but e-commerce changes so fast that if you stop staying ahead of the curve, you are destined to be left behind. Test new products & marketing channels, find other entrepreneurs to mastermind with, and pay attention to new technology uses in your field, and you will be primed for success.
