Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in general services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephen Crisafulli, Owner, and CEO of Five Star Clutter Removal, located in Auburn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer dumpster rentals as well as being a full-service junk and clutter removal company. Unlike other dumpster rental businesses, we charge one price for delivery and haul away with unlimited weight. Whether you're a DIY type that just needs a dumpster rental or you want someone else to do the heavy lifting, you're our customer.

Tell us about yourself

I like to view myself as a true go-getter. I always knew I wanted to be in business for myself, and I saw the clutter removal business as an opportunity. I'm motivated every day by success, and that doesn't only mean money. It means I can take care of my wife and kids and help them achieve their dreams.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to grow the business. When I started, I was small and hoped I would be able to one day pay myself a salary. Now I'm in a position where I am buying and upgrading my equipment regularly and will soon be expanding to Florida.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Stress, lots of stress! Being a business owner, everything falls on you. If your employees get sick, you work longer. If the economy takes a downturn, you will be directly impacted. Every day you will deal with stressful situations. Successful business owners learn how to manage their stress, or it will overtake them, and they'll have no chance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't listen to anyone with a negative attitude. I've always lived by the saying… "Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't seek advice from."
  2. Be in it 100%. If you start your business with an exit plan, you'll use that exit the second times get tough. You can count on struggles when starting your business. Be ready for them and be ready to fight through them, no matter what it takes.
  3. If you find an employee that gives their all every day, do what it takes to keep them around. Your people will be one of your greatest assets as a business owner. Also, don't overthink how to take care of your employees. They are people just like you. Treat them as if you were that star employee.
