Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Weddell, owner, and CEO of Swell Virtual Assistance, LLC, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner and CEO of Swell Virtual Assistance LLC. Swell Virtual Assistance provides administration, communication, and marketing services to small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurs.

Tell us about yourself

I am the daughter of entrepreneurs, so owning and running a small business has been a part of my life since I was young. I witnessed firsthand the benefits of owning your own company but also the hard work and struggle behind the scenes. I have always been so proud of my parents for their dedication, and I am honored to be able to follow in their entrepreneurial footsteps. When I was laid off in the summer of 2022, I decided that it was time to strike out on my own. I have ten years of professional experience and a passion for helping others. Being a virtual assistant gives me the opportunity to use the skills I've gained over my career and to help others achieve their business goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting started is such a big hurdle. It takes a lot of time, commitment, and courage to start a business. You have to have a solid idea, strategy, and brand in mind before you can really get the ball rolling. In addition to that, there is a learning curve if you've never done it before. There are a lot of registration forms and licenses to file, so it is easy to get intimidated. I am proud of how I've approached this challenge. It is definitely a balancing act to walk the line between progress and overwhelm.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Trusting yourself. Even with my years of experience and leading a company before, I still find myself doubting my abilities. It is essential to ignore that internal critic and tell yourself that you can do this. Sure, you'll make mistakes, but you will learn and grow from them. Just put one foot in front of the other each day!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a support network. I have found a great resource in the Women's Business Development Center located in Chicago, Illinois. This nonprofit organization offers amazing help to people looking to start their own businesses. I have attended several webinars and advising sessions through the WBDC. I definitely recommend utilizing them or a similar organization. Beyond that, start talking to the people in your own circle of contacts. I've reached out to family members, friends, and former colleagues for advice and input. So many great ideas and words of support have been shared with me and encouraged me to keep going.
  2. Start small. It is easy to get swept up in grand ideas about what your business could be, but in the beginning, it is important to focus on the core elements. Lay a strong foundation with a solid business plan and grow from there. Don't try to do everything at once.
  3. Take care of yourself. If you are starting a business, chances are you are a hardworking go-getter. This is great! However, this attitude can also lead to overwork and burnout if you don't cultivate a strong routine of self-care. Obviously, there will be times the business will require sacrifice but don't forget that you are your greatest asset.
