Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Pellett, Founder of Stephanie Pellett Creative, located in Waterloo, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a coach, community leader, and educator for thoughtful, values-based entrepreneurs! I help my clients build intentional, sustainable businesses that can support them as much as they support their customers. I created The Profoundery, my online business community, to give people accountability, strategy & connection as they build toward their dreams. And I also run Slowpreneur: Business Without the Busy, my podcast about finding thoughtful ways to live & work.

Tell us about yourself

Honestly, I am really motivated by my clients. I want to see them succeed, and my definition of success goes a lot further than sales & numbers. For me, it's so meaningful when I can work with clients to help them set better boundaries, get clear on their message, or set up sustainable systems for themselves.

I truly believe that the world needs what you have to give, and I see it as my job to support people so they can bring their unique magic to the people who need it most. Throughout my career (I've worked as a virtual assistant, marketing consultant, video producer, etc.!), the throughline has always been about helping businesses grow and truly thrive in the process. Even when it's hard (and there are no easy answers!), it's incredibly rewarding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my favorite projects to work on was being a video host for Learn With Shopify, a business education YouTube channel by Shopify. I absolutely love making business concepts more accessible, and getting to work with them meant I could bring high-quality educational videos to WAY more people. It was really fun and really impactful.

The other thing I'm proudest of is the group of entrepreneurs who make up The Profoundery community. They are all so thoughtful, so supportive, and so enthusiastic about one another's businesses and endeavors. It is not easy to find kind, genuine people who really get it, but I really feel like we've created one of the best places on the Internet, and that's full because of our amazing members.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Without a doubt, I think it's that almost everything falls to you. Big businesses have entire departments for marketing, product design, and so on. When it's your business, you are in every department! That is a lot of work and responsibility that doesn't always get acknowledged or appreciated, and it can be very stressful. It's incredibly challenging to wear so many different hats and to be in charge of your own time. Each of these things – building a schedule, giving yourself breaks, juggling priorities – is a learning experience and can teach you a lot, but they're not easy. And lastly, it's really hard to keep yourself motivated and to move forward! This is why I'm such a huge proponent of finding community and accountability for myself to keep that momentum going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find fellow entrepreneurs that you can bounce ideas off of, learn from, stay accountable to, and sometimes borrow their belief in your success. It's so essential.
  2. Start small & build as you go. You don't need fancy expensive systems right out of the gate. Start with your local community, build up interest, and expand as you need to.
  3. Tell everyone about what you're doing! It can be hard to talk about our businesses in the beginning, but telling friends & family is the best way to start that word-of-mouth engine running.
