Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Mendes, co-owner of Arlington Personal Fitness, located in Arlington, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My husband and I own a small personal training and health coaching business in Northern Virginia, right outside of DC. I am in the business of helping people live better lives through fitness and nutrition. My clients are people who want to live their fullest life no matter their age. We work through all different kinds of roadblocks, physiological and psychological, to help them achieve the highest level of self-actualization possible.

Tell us about yourself

I was very lucky to have had several wonderful mentors who helped me get started in the field of health and fitness, starting when I was a new mother in my 20s. And I am very blessed that my husband and I are in the same field and shared a vision for where we thought our business could go. My clients are what motivates me each and every day. Every little thing I can teach or show them or every improvement they make, no matter how small, keeps me such a jolt of energy that I cannot wait to do it again the next day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My husband and I feel that our biggest accomplishment is creating a strong sense of community and support between our clients. They show up and support one another along the path of health and fitness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing your time and your money and not letting work be your only passion.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Layout a business plan with an expert.
  2. Start small and grow.
  3. Develop relationships with mentors and other small business owners in your field.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am very blessed to have a career that I am passionate about and that I have been able to work around my family life. Having a fulfilling career that helps others is the most important thing to me outside of my family.
