Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Dorfman, Founder of Stephanie Dorfman Nutrition, located in Astoria, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Stephanie Dorfman Nutrition is a nutrition counseling business focusing on healing your relationship with food, body, and movement. We use an individualized and weight-inclusive approach because we believe that our health is so much more than what the number on a scale could ever tell us.

We are here to:

  • Help you find where food and flexibility meet.
  • Help you understand why you think about food the way you do and how you can use the principles of Intuitive Eating to transform those thoughts away from diet culture.
  • Help you be curious rather than judgmental about your Intuitive Eating journey.

We work with folks looking to ditch diets for good and those recovering from an eating disorder. So, if you are sick of dieting and ready to bring joy back to food - you are in the right place.

Tell us about yourself

I am not always the anti-diet, Intuitive Eating registered dietitian that you are meeting today. I went through the same weight-focused nutrition education that all dietitians do – but something clicked a few years ago when I learned about Intuitive Eating. I re-learned and re-understood why I became a dietitian – to help heal people's relationship with food and ditch diet culture for good! The more I learned about Intuitive Eating ideas such as "Reject the diet mentality" and "Honor your hunger," rather than encouraging others to follow yet another restrictive diet, I knew this was the approach I wanted to use with my nutrition clients!

I am here to provide a safe and supportive space to chat about your successes and struggles with all things related to food and movement. Join me virtually in a relaxed and comfortable environment (with a few visits from my dog, Norman), where we will have open conversations and discuss how to reach your personal goals. We will focus more on behavioral changes than numbers, and I will always meet you where you are in your journey towards intuitive eating and living.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just starting! It's so tough to take that leap and create my own business. I celebrate every milestone as a business owner - my first client, my first year in business, a re-brand to better display how I work with clients - I have considered everything a significant and exciting accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are always new things to learn as a business owner. You are constantly reminded that you don't know everything, and every day there is a new hurdle to overcome. That is the most complex and most exciting part of being a business owner. Since starting my business, I have only grown most positively as an Intuitive Eating Registered Dietitian and business professional.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the Leap - just start. There is never a "right" time to start a business; everyone has to start somewhere.
  2. You won't know everything when you start - every business owner is always learning new ways to grow and improve their business.
  3. Find YOUR people! Build a great support system of like-minded professionals to ask questions, lean on, and have as friends or colleagues.
