Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tanya Singhal, clinic director of Stayfit Physio & Spinal Decompression Centre, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a unique business in the heart of Ottawa, offering a blend of both health and beauty services. Our clients range from very young children to seniors and come from near and far. We provide some specialized services like spinal decompression therapy, vertigo, TMJ and concussion rehab, and shockwave therapy. We have invested in the modern and latest technology for both healthcare and Aesthetic services. We take pride in our multidisciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Massage therapists, acupuncturists, and soon to start an Osteopath, all with over 15years of experience. We present ourselves with a one-stop-shop for our clients.

Tell us about yourself

After working for many years in the healthcare field as a physiotherapist, I always dreamt of having my own practice and being able to have a team of various disciplines providing a holistic approach to a problem. I always believed that there is no one thing that works for every problem. We need to work as a team to address the issues of our clients. Then came along the medi-spa as an addition to our services which added a whole new perspective of skincare to our business. The feedback of our clients and the amazing results we get to see, give us the motivation to keep going. It's music to our ears when our patients tell us how they have been pain-free after many years of chronic issues and how nothing ever worked on their problem before they came to us. It's a very satisfying feeling to see someone live and enjoy their life pain-free.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When we see people choosing our business and services over other similar companies much closer to their place, we feel special. We get clients from over a 100km radius, and it makes us think that we must be doing something right to earn their trust. There is no bigger reward than getting many of our clients by word of mouth referral. Our existing and returning clients are our biggest source of referral, and we want them to know that we value and appreciate their business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Establishing one's own practice does involve some tough steps, including branding and establishing your presence in the already competitive market. The last two years were hugely impacted due to COVID, especially our aesthetic aspect of the business, but thanks to our loyal clients, we sailed through the hardships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Only start a business if you are passionate and love what you do.
  2. Good market research, a well-laid plan, and correct timings are most important.
  3. Never stop coming up with new and innovative ideas.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We keep coming up with new promotions and deals and also services from time to time. New and existing clients are encouraged to check with us for promos.
