What's your business, and who are your customers?
My brands are Stay Golden Cosmetics and uQueen Organics. Stay Golden provides cosmetics for women and men who want to stand out from the crowd. Our collections are very bold, dynamic, and unforgettable.
uQueen Organics is a self-care and wellness brand that caters to the modern woman. The products there are meant to have women relax and care for themselves via an at-home luxurious experience.
Tell us about yourself
I started because I wanted to build something for myself, though, at the time, I wasn't entirely clear on what it was. What motivates me today are our customers, my team, my family, and an inner obsession with serving my purpose, which I believe is aligned with making women feel great about themselves.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is being able to hire my mom and two of my high school friends. Being able to be in a position to lend an opportunity to them and watching them grow as a result is fulfilling. It makes everything we've been through feel worth it. It's also inspiring for me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I've struggled with being disciplined to some degree. To get up every day and push myself is not something I've completely mastered, and sometimes, I feel like I don't know the ideal structure for me that keeps me super productive, as well as healthy holistically. Recently, I decided that the ideal discipline for me involves a healthy morning routine, an efficient workday, and a healthy decompressing night routine. If I complete my morning routine, I'm already setting myself up for a good day. It entails a morning devotion (prayer and worship), meditation, working out, and a healthy breakfast. That usually sets a great tone for everything else to fall into place. The challenge is doing this consistently.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You should be completely willing to serve your customers and build a relationship with them for several years. It's not one-and-done.
- It's a lot of work, studying, and lessons that may look like a failure, but these lessons allow you to grow, shift and build strong foundations that you'll need.
- Invest in mentorship, and it's good to have more than one. Mentors may help you with saving time and money, and they can guide you in the direction that you may want to go. It's good to learn from other people, from their wins and their mistakes.
