Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in psychological support but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Toni Start of Start and Associates Psychological Support based in Grand Haven, Michigan.

What's your business and who are your customers?

We are an outpatient psychological private practice helping people of all ages and lifestyles live their best life. We help them find calm where there is anxiety, feel hopeful where there is depression, and inspire them to live more consciously and authentically.

Tell us about yourself

I remember when I was about 5-years-old, I knew I wanted to be a psychologist with my own private practices with associates as I wanted to help others and be with others doing the same. In retrospect, I believe I heard my plan and felt my passion. I continue to be motivated because I get to be with others who experience real change and healing in their lives; it's a blessing!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making it work. Doing the behind the scenes hard stuff that no one knows about. The financial risks involved, the sleep lost, the dare to create, the guts to make it happen, and figuring it out as I go.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's non stop, meaning work might be done on a Friday night or Sunday morning.

It all falls on me. The risk of everything falling. Answering questions to the best of my ability. Living with somewhere in my mind lies the possibility of the risk of losing it all.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Listen to your intuition, your guts feelings, and make decisions based on this. Have a vision for what you want to create. And, go for it...make it happen.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take it seriously. Be kind to everyone. Know that you don't know everything. Ask for help. It's a learning process so embrace the learning. One thing at a time.

Honor your vision and not be swayed when it doesn't fit your intuition. Be focused. Celebrate along with way. And have fun.
