Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in human resources consulting but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Ryan, Founder of Star Human Resources Consulting, LLC., located in Pembroke, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business helps small and mid-sized organizations across all aspects of the employee life cycle, including but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, policy development, reporting, analytics, and streamlining and automating your processes.

I coach managers to help them get the best out of their employees. So whether it's ongoing or on a project basis, I partner with you to achieve your goals through your people.

Tell us about yourself

I spent over 25 years in large corporate HR roles. I have vast experience across human resources, and I realized that most small and mid-size organizations don't have access to that kind of expertise. I enjoy the challenges each day brings, and the variety of industries and companies I work with ensures no two days are ever the same.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say starting it in the middle of the pandemic and having to build trust and new relationships virtually.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am not sure it's any different than when I worked for someone else. If you love your work, it is not work, and you have to remind yourself to take time for yourself. Whether it's family and friends, a vacation, a workout, or just a walk around the neighborhood, it's easy to get caught up and forget to take the time to reset.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First things first, I would say talk to people who have already done it and find out what worked and what didn't.

Second, build and maintain your network. Going solo can be lonely so having a network of partners and advisors helps fill the gap that your officemates may have filled before.

Third, have fun, and do what you love most of the time. There will always be things you might not enjoy, like billing or prospecting, but if your core business is what you love, you are starting off on the right foot.
