Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Marraffa, Co-Founder of Sprouting Anew, located in Westmoreland, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Sprouting Anew. I offer a line of all-natural, plant-based, handmade skincare products. All products and packaging are eco-conscious and vegan-friendly. My customers are anyone interested in holistic, natural, and earth-friendly products and lifestyle practices!

Tell us about yourself

My business began as a hobby - I love learning about all things related to holistic wellness! During the initial COVID shutdown, I spent much of my free time concocting face masks using anything I had in the kitchen. From there, it blossomed into a line of products that I loved.

I knew the next step was to share these products with others. It is my dream to pursue this passion full-time and continue to benefit from the incredible benefits that natural products provide.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is all that I have learned along the way so far. Each day I am able to refine my process and navigate the small business world a little better than yesterday. I am thrilled to see my products offered at multiple local locations as well as online. It’s really a dream come true.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In my opinion, one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is learning to balance time - I work a full-time job during the day, so much of my business prep is done during nights and weekends. There have been many late nights of labeling products and perfecting recipes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I would give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business are:

  1. Do your research & take advantage of the free resources that are available for new business owners! I had one phone call with a mentor at OCC who gave me so much valuable information to start out with. WISE in Syracuse, NY, is also an incredible resource for female entrepreneurs.
  2. Be authentic in all that you do - being true to yourself and your values is what will make your business uniquely yours. Let your personality and passion for your work shine!
  3. Have confidence in yourself and what you are offering. It can be overwhelming, and you may feel like second-guessing yourself, but always remember your “why” and what inspired you to create your business in the first place.
