What's your business, and who are your customers?
Spot Creations is the Philadelphia web design, graphic design, video editing, and illustration studio of Mike Noonan. Since 2004 Mike has worked with clients both locally and around the world on projects ranging in scope.
Tell us about yourself
I spent my childhood in Centreville, Virginia, where at a young age, I found an affinity for illustration. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree under VCU's Communication Arts program. After bouncing around the country for a few years (Winston-Salem, Washington, DC, Austin, Texas), I made Philadelphia, PA, my home.
I worked in a variety of graphic design environments, including design studios, print shops, and office settings, both in temporary and permanent positions. While doing so, I freelanced on nights and weekends, building up a client base. And in 2004, I started Spot Creations. Every day is a new creative challenge. I love the process. The collaboration with the client. The ever-evolving technology. I'm still constantly learning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Maintaining a consistent client base for 20 years. Always meeting and exceeding their expectations.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
There are always challenges. You have to be adaptable. Some clients will retire. Networking and consistent marketing is the key.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Set realistic goals. Know that it's not going to be an overnight success. Any situation can turn into a business.
