Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Johnson, Founder of Splatte By Lisa J, located in Cahokia, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Splatte By Lisa J is a Small Business that specializes in up-cycling basic camouflage & denim by adding paint splatter and hand-painted images that create a unique, eye-catching fashionable look.

Tell us about yourself

Splatte By Lisa J started out as a "Quarantine" hobby in March of 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic. I had recently sparked an interest in painting a camouflage jacket but had not had the time to do so until the pandemic. I went and purchased the materials needed and splattered my first jacket. After completing the design, I posted the finished product on Facebook, and the rest was history.

Prior to designing my first jacket earlier that same year, I had prayed, asking God to reveal my gifts to me. Gifts outside of my profession. Gifts that I enjoy and that challenge me to do something different from all of my professional training, degrees & certifications. It is safe to say that in establishing Splatte By Lisa J, my prayers were answered. (Long story made short, lol).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I have created my own platform & brand by being consistent, not giving up, & challenging myself to push through the obstacles. Simply put, BELIEVING IN ME!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Responsibility & Accountability - You are the BOSS. You are the face of the brand. You are responsible for your business's success, failures & lessons. You are responsible for the advertisement, inventory, customer service, packaging, product, EVERYTHING, lol. If you don't have time to commit to your business, then you don't have time for your business to be successful. Everything & every outcome is up to and on YOU.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set realistic business goals -long & short term, but be flexible & don't beat yourself up.
  2. Commit to establishing your business- be willing to devote however much time is needed to accomplish the goals that you have set.
  3. Be Observant of your business- the audience, your product, sales, what's working, and what's not working. Make a note of patterns for when business is booming and when it is slow. Make a note of the trends that your audience has set ( meaning a possible spike in business may occur that you had not predicted, make a note).

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Social media is definitely a target audience. Get out there and share your brand. Once you establish an audience, don't be shy; share your personality with your followers. Not your life but your personality (outings, interests, fun opinions). It's ok to sometimes be transparent with your followers.
