Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Diane Spitale, Owner of Spitale Laser Spa Salon, located in Rochester, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Spitale's have been in the personal care business going on three generations now. My father-in-law started in 1960. In 1975 my husband entered the field and in the early 2000"s our children joined us. I entered in 2006 as we started the first Laser Spa in Rochester. We plan to continue through many more generations.

Tell us about yourself

First and foremost, I CARE! I started researching the field due to watching a family member's embarrassment fighting an unwanted visible hair that a lady should not have. This opportunity presented itself when my husband met a candela laser salesman and asked me if I was interested in a career change. I jumped at the chance and felt it was an opportunity to exercise my compassion and make a difference in people's lives. When I think back on that day that I was able to treat my family member, I get so emotional! But Thank God that he presented me with this opportunity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That would be two accomplishments:

Being able to help our guests achieve their goals, be it laser hair removal or Coolscuplting fat reduction, to help them get a jump start on a healthier lifestyle. It makes me so happy when I treat our guests, kids, and family member that were referred by our happy customers.

Watching my team grow, each one is personally trained by me and not able to perform treatments until we have them certified, and I'm comfortable that they can perform at the level of safety and service technique that I require.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When a client comes in for a consult and is deemed not a candidate for whatever particular treatment they are interested in. I want to help each and every patient out there, but that is sometimes not possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It takes a lot of money to get started.
  2. I would say make training and continual education your first priority. It's not enough to get into this business only to make money. You have to really care about your guest.
  3. Treat every customer like they are your grandparent and how you would like a stranger to treat them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Thank you for the opportunity to tell my story! We are a locally owned family business and treat all our team as family and all our guests the way!
