Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bill Corrado, Owner of Spice Beast Inc, located in Goshen, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is called Spice Beast, and we make healthy and clean spice blends and rubs for the health-conscious cook.

Tell us about yourself

The idea for Spice Beast was born from my inability to cook and the wanting to transform my poor eating habits. I was newly divorced and unable to feed myself besides takeout, and dining alone was no fun, so it was easy to just order a pizza…..every day! I wanted to be able to cook and eat clean, but I realized quickly that with no cooking skills, I kept eating the same bland meals. This clean eating stuff wouldn't last very long because I LOVE FOOD. Now, food was my enemy, and I hated eating clean and knew I couldn't go back to who I was. So I started dabbling in the spice aisle and even tried some of those gourmet brands. Most of the stuff in the supermarket is filled with sugar, salt, or artificial fillers, and the gourmet brands just didn't do it for me.

Alas, the Beast was born. Spice Beast was created so a guy like me can eat clean, have flavor, and not need a culinary degree. I am motivated by knowing I am creating something real. Transparency and honesty. It's easy to lay my head on the pillow at night, knowing I made someone fall in love with food all over again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking something from nothing and building it into something.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing all the moving parts. Being a small business, I don't have the luxury of having teams of people to keep things from falling through the cracks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust your instinct.
  2. Listen to everyone but always make your own choices.
  3. It's ok to fail. The trick is to always give maximum effort, even in failure.
