Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carlton Johnson, Ph.D., Managing Director of Spectrix Metaphysical Institute, Ltd. Co., located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Spectrix Metaphysical Institute is a provider of metaphysical services. There are two main categories of services: energetic therapies and mindfulness therapies. These therapies combine energy-healing modalities (such as Reiki and Biofield Tuning), a mind-body connecting modality (via Hypnotherapy and NLP), and the rigor of the scientific process to foster predictable, repeatable results that do not require trailing medications or controlled substances.
At Spectrix, we believe the science, and we know our experience. We target individuals that need either stand-alone or complementary treatments to aid in relaxation, chronic pain management, or elimination of limiting beliefs. The focus is to provide integrative and complementary services – enhancing a client’s circle of care.
Tell us about yourself
I was inspired by family members who would be under medical care but would not find relief in taking numerous medications. I wanted to see them be able to enjoy life without being chained to a pill bottle, taking extended stays in the hospital, and engaged in regimens that did not provide actual relief. My greatest inspiration is my mother, who passed before I could finish my training in Reiki. She encouraged me to keep going, digging deeper, and connecting people to the science of complementary therapies and healing modalities. WaveRen, originally an accounting services firm, created Spectrix at a time when clients expressed fears and pain concerning the COVID pandemic. While providing accounting, tax, and advisory services on the front end, I provided these modalities on the back end, which did help ease some of the mental and emotional stress of clients at the time.
If we continue to experience daily stress from limiting beliefs, discomfort from disease, and any number of phobias – Spectrix and my growing toolbox have a future in being a beacon of hope and a helping hand. I use these skills and talents to provide a path to help others realize their goals. My biggest motivation is finding several solutions to solve both simple and complex problems: gaining new knowledge and skills which can help diverse individuals with a plethora of solutions.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is the completion of my Ph.D. in Metaphysical Science at IMHS in 2019. Drs. Kelley, Hunter, Norstrom, and Irwin were my guardian stars – lighting my path along that journey. That event has opened several doors and aided me in confidently adding five related professional designations. In addition, I was able to get out of my own way and enjoy the alchemy and chemistry of a new and exciting field for me.
I gained some credibility by reason of my degree, but it also fueled my desire to know more and increased my ability to bring other solutions to the table. Vastly different from the certainty of accounting, metaphysical science has allowed me to grow and find my identity as the owner of a business in a relatively new and expanding field of mind-body and energy work.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is carving out your own path in your chosen field and gaining credibility with an unconventional offering. As a business owner, you will find yourself telling and retelling your story - but the catch is that you must first know yourself and be willing to allow the facts to align with the truth. A foundation to which you always come is required in times of uncertainty. This foundation helps guide where your path eventually leads and determines if anyone is willing to follow you or co-labor with you as you follow your destiny.
There is an African proverb that states, “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. In carving out your path, you will often go alone and move quickly. This is carving your path – one-half of the process. This must be balanced with going far, finding your “people,” and making a go at launching into the deep. Only then can you blaze a trail with many choices from which to choose.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Top tips. I've been in business in accounting and now metaphysical science for 20 years collectively. I made my share of mistakes and have seen other businesses come and go:
- Learn to confront your fears head-on. It is in the head where the battle is first fought, and the victory is secured. Take the necessary steps to diffuse anything that may thwart your success.
- Use your imagination - it is powerful. The common saying is that you should "fake it 'til you make it." When you use your imagination, nothing is fake - it is a ground to test strategy, develop the right mindset, and see success before it happens. Success becomes an expectation when first seen in the imagination.
- Have fun as you remember why you are doing what you are doing. I made a promise to myself in 2001 that if what I do ceases to be fun, then I will cease doing it. Fruitless is the enterprise that generates piles of cash but in which you have no pleasure or fun. The idea is to have both you personally, and your bank account grow.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Give yourself time to make things happen. Trust yourself and the process. Develop products and services which can serve the public, then open yourself to feedback. As you hone and sharpen your skills and improve your products and services, your customers will appreciate their voices being heard. They will be able to see themselves in the products and services you provide, and you will build trust the likes of which the world has never seen!
