Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Malone, owner of Spark: The Secret Place, located in Rimrock, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a holistic wellness company. We offer fitness and nutrition coaching, reiki healing, and hypnotherapy to transform people's minds, bodies, and spirits. We are not just a coaching company, I also offer personal growth courses, meditation packages, multi-day retreats, and free events to bring the community closer together with like-minded people who desire growth and healing as well. My customers are anyone who desires growth, healing, and connection.

Tell us about yourself

My journey began with my own healing journey. As a survivor of a severe eating disorder, rape, cutting, alcohol, and abusive relationships, I decided I wanted more for myself. I knew I was different, and I had a passion for people. My business found me as I began passionately helping and serving people, and it evolved as I became more well-versed in new gifts and tools. Humanity and the healing of humanity motivate me. It's what gets me out of bed every day. I am so ultimately passionate about helping people that nothing will stop me from creating the vision I have for our world!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment - is growth. I have put my ego away on many different occasions in an effort to do what is BEST, not what I WANT for my company. The growth in that and creating a community that has a safe space here is my biggest accomplishment and one I am proud of every time I see the faces of the Spark community!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is, by far, understanding my role and the sacrifices I must make in order to lead my company to success. It requires a level of focus and sacrifice that sometimes creates a sense of loneliness, and understanding that I am doing that for the greater good is hard. Leading people is challenging because I must do for them what they NEED, not just what I know they should do. It's been a challenge to find that line between leading and telling while also keeping myself at a distance so as not to become distracted by the people I serve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't think - just do! The more you think, the less likely you are to ACT.
  2. Follow your heart and be willing to change directions - you may have a set plan in your head. Be flexible in your approach to get there; there will be many bumps along the way.
  3. Be careful who you share it with, but connect with people. People are the business. People, people, people!
