Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ruth Espada, Founder and CEO of Spa Suite 4, located in East Islip, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Founder of Spa Suite 4. I specialize in pain relief for the whole family. I support my clients' Self-care journey through massage therapy and other therapeutic services. My clients are everyday people striving to improve their quality of life. It's best to stay PROactive rather than REactive with physical pain and the stressors of life.

Tell us about yourself

In 1999, I was in a motor vehicle accident and sustained fractures that led to chronic pain. I learned firsthand the benefits of massage therapy as I was a client. I've been seeing the same massage therapist since then, and we've developed what I like to call a therapeutic bond. A bond for the health of me and where my preferences and areas of concern are heeded.

Another driving force in my decision to become an LMT was my younger Sister, who had a terminal illness. I wanted to help her gain comfort from her discomfort. She passed away early on during my schooling; however, what I did learn I applied to her benefit.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the confidence in myself and my skills to take the Leap of Faith. All benefit. I cannot dim my light when there is so much I can do to help others. I continue to grow my knowledge and skill set to positively affect the mind and body.

I am a NYS licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master, and Certified Reflexologist. I have been a member of the American Massage Therapist Association since 2008. During COVID Shutdown, I became a Cupping Therapist and NYS Board Certified Hypnotherapist. I aspire to further my certifications and licenses. I have a direction, and it is FORWARD.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Accountability. I am a solo practitioner and business owner, so I must stay motivated to complete the MANY responsibilities of running a business and ALL that it entails. If I don't keep up, then I can get bogged down. Seriously, MANY responsibilities. I've learned to outsource certain tasks so that I can focus on the STELLAR services I provide.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Organize and strengthen your foundation, legally and ethically.
  2. Hire a Coach. Someone in your field that has succeeded and REMAIN coachable.
  3. Solidify your niche. When you have a clear direction, they will come.
  4. Be passionate about what you offer to your clients/customers. They will feel that connection.
  5. Join a professional group of like-minded individuals and participate. Great networking and ideas.
  6. Plan for your retirement. No one will take care of you as you can.
  7. RECOGNIZE YOUR WORTH!
