Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex-Ann Green, Founder of SP!KE Customer Experience Strategies, located in Palm Bay, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SP!KE is a customer experience strategy firm. We develop business-specific strategies and teach entrepreneurs and their teams how to grow their business, de-escalate and handle difficult customers through the customer experience.

Tell us about yourself

I got started in my business based on my experiences with various organizations globally. I was less than thrilled to give my hard-earned dollars to companies that did not make the experience worthwhile for me. I was determined to find a solution. I realized my training and experience allowed me to create a solution for this problem. A solution that would please both customers and business owners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment has had employees along the way that believed in the mission and vision. They have committed to the success of the business, and their expertise has been invaluable.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Decision fatigue is one of the hardest components that is often overlooked. As the business owner, all decisions (at least in the beginning) are at your feet. It is a continuous stream of choices, both wide and small, with ripple effects. It often seems like you don't even have time to breathe. Learning to step back from it and take care of yourself is necessary to manage this inevitable hurdle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Go into it, knowing that each day will not be pleasant. It is a marathon, not a sprint, so keep pushing. Don't be afraid to ask for help and collaborate in and out of your industry. Knowing your weak points is key to overcoming hurdles that can cripple your business. You won't know/learn everything. Outsource. Make time to rest!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I see many awesome ideas and ventures that should be profitable but are less than they can be because the customer experience is being overlooked. Don't leave money on the table or stunt your business growth by overlooking your customer experience. The large companies you aspire to are investing more in their customer experience than their marketing. Take a cue from them.
