Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Connor Butterworth, Owner of Southwestern Rugs Depot, located in Athens, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Southwestern Rugs Depot, is an e-commerce store selling high-quality, American-made area rugs. Our customers are discerning individuals looking for uniquely designed rugs that match their tastes and enhance their homes' decor.

Tell us about yourself

My journey into entrepreneurship was quite accidental. Initially, I was passionate about filmmaking and web design, but I got introduced to the rug industry during my high school days. Working closely with a rug design company, American Dakota, I delved into the art of designing rugs and experienced entrepreneurial operations firsthand, which sparked my interest in the endeavor. Today, it's the joy and satisfaction of our customers that keeps me going. Their appreciation and kind words for our personalized customer service and quality products are my constant motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching Southwestern Rugs Depot grow steadily has been my biggest accomplishment as a business owner. I take great pride in the fact that we have a high number of repeat customers. It tells me that people love our products enough to buy them again and again - and that's an incredibly satisfying feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, one of the most challenging things is managing all aspects of the business. Balancing the supply chain, customer support, online presence, and financials often feel like juggling live coals. However, this challenge also keeps me on my toes and encourages constant learning and adaptation.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your niche: Uncover a gap in the market that aligns with your skills and interests. Your unique selling proposition should solve a problem or cater to a need that hasn't been addressed adequately.
  2. Prioritize Customer Satisfaction: Strive to provide top-notch customer service. A happy customer not only brings repeat business but also turns into a brand ambassador who brings in more customers.
  3. Adapt and Innovate: Be ready to evolve with the market trends. Innovation and flexibility are the keys to survival in today's dynamic business landscape.
