Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Boucher Terrell, Founder of Southern Sun Designs, located in Hillsborough, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business consists of uniquely made-to-order shirts. Whether you’re looking for a present for someone special or something for yourself, I have many designs that can fit nearly any occasion. I have recently expanded my product line and now have the ability to cater to a bigger customer base. I offer sublimation, unique bleach-style designs, as well as direct-to-garment shirts. With this expansion, I hope to branch out into bulk commercial orders while still meeting the needs of my existing customer base.

Tell us about yourself

My business started as more of a hobby with a Cricut machine making vinyl t-shirts and gifts for family and friends. When COVID hit, and I was at home with my three children, I began researching sublimation and bleached-style shirts. I have always thought of myself as a crafty and creative person, so why not turn that into a career? With the support of my husband, we purchased everything I needed to start Southern Sun Designs. What motivates me more than anything is that I absolutely love what I do and get joy when others love the products they receive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far is the ability to show my kids what dedication and hard work can achieve. Having the order volume also grants me the ability to turn it into a family affair and get everyone involved in the business. Even though we may be putting everyone in the house to work, it is a real blessing for all of us to be spending time together. Since starting this business, I am also able to help provide financially in a way I was never able to do as a stay-at-home mom.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner, for me, is always staying positive through tough situations. Whether it is a slow time of year, extenuating circumstances, or a customer that wasn’t pleased with their product, I often have to remind myself to stay positive, and there will be better days ahead.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When starting a business, make sure it is built around something you love and brings you joy.
  2. Don’t get discouraged; success isn’t achieved overnight. Persevere through difficult times, and you will be astonished when looking back over your accomplishments.
  3. There are no shortcuts to success. Any business is built on hard work and dedication.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Not everyone is going to love what you bring to the table, but when you find the niche you belong in, everything will fall into place. When I first started on my business journey, my husband thought the beached-style shirts were beyond silly. However, he has always remained supportive in any direction I have decided to take. My business took off pretty quickly, and I am so thankful for each and every person that has contributed to making Southern Sun Designs a success.
