Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hong Yan, Owner of Southcentre Chinese Acupuncture, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Southcentre Chinese Acupuncture was established in 2006 in Calgary. It provides authentic acupuncture services, including but not limited to: pain management, woman's health (infertility, IVF/IUI support, menopause difficulties, miscarriage prevention, PMS), central nervous system dysfunction (anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, ADHD, dystopia), IBS, MS, mild autoimmune disorders, allergies, and thyroid dysfunction. We can also help with addictions (nicotine and alcohol), weight loss, and facial rejuvenation. Over the years, we helped thousands of Calgarians, and the clinic has gained a high reputation among locals.

Tell us about yourself

I started my acupuncture career in 1993. I have a master's degree majoring in Acupuncture from Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (P.R.China). Over the years, I gained tremendous experience in treating a variety of disorders with acupuncture mainly.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I immigrated to Canada in 2004, knowing nobody here. Now I run a popular and busy business South of Calgary. Most of the new clients I get now are from word of mouth. Quite often, they heard of me from more than one person. I guess as an immigrant, having gained approval and recognition from the locals is the biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Growing a business is always hard, but I am okay with it. Over the years, I have been working long hours to build up a busy practice. I worked a lot, but I enjoyed it. The hardest thing is the pandemic. Being forced to shut down and not knowing the future. And seeing the business going downwards over the last 2.5 years is very painful. Hopefully, it will get back to the pre-pandemic level in the near future.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Being an expert in your field.
  2. Start small.
  3. Work hard.
