Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jena Minnick-Bull, Owner of South Coast Conservatory, located in Laguna Niguel, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Performing arts education for kids, teens, and adults. We provide classes and competitive programs in ballet, hip hop, tumbling, aerial arts, acting, singing, tap, jazz, and teacher certification.

Tell us about yourself

I am a passionate educator and want to change lives through the many lifelong benefits of performing arts. My life, and the lives of all I know, are better off because of the deep connections that dance and drama have created. We have connected so many souls, helping people reach their goals and become more confident, creative, and collaborative. Every day I become inspired by witnessing the impact that it has on people, whether they are learning, performing, or teaching others. It's a beautiful cycle that has enriched the lives of all of humanity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Raising four incredible kids during the last 22 years of business ownership. With 50+ employees, we have been honored with awards such as Small Business of the Year in Orange County from the California State Assembly, awarded "Best of.." 16 years in a row by the City of Laguna Niguel, and we now teach in 40 public schools to students with financial needs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balance and perspective! A business owner is always seeking new opportunities and ways to efficiently connect with their community while also keeping consistent with what the business was founded on. A business owner can work 24/7, but healthy boundaries and great mentors have helped me maintain that balance and provide clarity on what matters most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on your goals - keep them in front of you at all times and break them down into quarterly, monthly, and weekly manageable tasks.
  2. Build your company with the plan to one day leave it in the hands of others.
  3. You are the most valuable employee of your company. Make sure you take care of your most valuable employee!
